Cytokines and growth factors function within an intricate network of proteins, binding to specific receptors on target cells to initiate signaling pathways that govern a broad array of biological processes. Growth factors primarily drive cell proliferation or differentiation, while cytokines can either inhibit or promote cellular growth. Typically, small (5–20 kDa), cytokines can signal in autocrine, paracrine, or endocrine fashions. They include interleukins, interferons, and chemokines, playing a crucial role in immune system regulation.

Disturbances in the balance of cytokine or growth factor signaling, caused by agents affecting receptor binding, can lead to various disease conditions. Recombinant cytokines are employed therapeutically to treat cancers, hepatitis C, and multiple sclerosis. Additionally, antibodies targeting pro-inflammatory cytokines are used to manage rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and plaque psoriasis.

To understand the action mechanisms of biologic drugs targeting cytokine and growth factor signaling, cell-based bioassays are commonly used. These assays measure the activity of cytokines or growth factors, enabling the ranking of candidate biologic molecules, evaluation of potency and stability, and QC lot release testing.

Assessing cytokine presence and their release from immune cells is also vital for comprehending how biologic drugs activate immune cells. For instance, markers like IL-2, IL-6, and IFN-γ are often measured to characterize T cell activation, which is useful in evaluating CAR-T and other cell therapies.

We offer a full range of cytokine assay kits, from interleukins, interferons (IFN), and chemokines to TNF and lymphokines, in easy-to-use formats.

Cytokine detection technology

Our cell-based immunoassays measure cytokine release in cell supernatant. They have been validated in several cell lines, primary cells, and PBMCs to ensure relevance, and their low sample requirement enables the quantification of multiple cytokines in parallel from the same supernatant.

The assessment of serum samples often requires enhanced sensitivity. In some cases, our assays have demonstrated sufficient sensitivity to enable the detection of low levels of analytes in serum or plasma.

AlphaLISA™, HTRF™, and LANCE™ Ultra™ TR-FRET are fast alternatives to cytokine ELISA kits or other measurement methods for researchers in the fields of oncology, inflammatory diseases, or any other inflammation process.
