Hereditary hemochromatosis is an iron overload disorder. Individuals with hemochromatosis absorb too much dietary iron, which is stored in the body's tissues and organs (skin, heart, liver, pancreas, joints). Over time, excess iron can damage tissues and organs. Symptoms in untreated individuals can include abdominal pain, weakness, lethargy, weight loss, arthralgias, diabetes mellitus increased risk of cirrhosis, skin pigmentation, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, arthritis, and hypogonadism. There are four types of hereditary hemochromatosis, with Type 1 being one of the most common genetic disorders in the United States and affecting about 1 million people. Types 1, 2, and 3 are inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, while Type 4 is autosomal dominant. (NIH, genetics home reference)
