Histone H3 is one of the five main histones involved in the structure of chromatin in eukaryotic cells. Histone H3 is the most extensively modified of the five histones and is phosphorylated during mitosis and meiosis. Aurora kinase B is directly responsible for mitotic Histone H3 Ser10 phosphorylation. Aurora kinase A is amplified in human cancers, with its overexpression in human tumors correlating with a poor prognosis and genomic instability. Histone H3 is implicated in glioblastomas, ovarian carcinomas, and hepatocellular carcinomas.
