Focal adhesion kinase (FAK), also known as protein tyrosine kinase 2 (PTK2), is a non-receptor tyrosine kinase that can be activated by growth factor receptors, cytokine receptors, and GPCRs. FAK is a central regulator of ECM/integrin and cadherin signaling and plays a role in cell adhesion, cell junction, migration, survival, and mechanosensing. Increased FAK expression and phosphorylation is implicated in increased tumor cell adhesion, tumor cell motility and invasion, and with fibroblast migration on fibronectin in tissue fibrosis.
