Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) is a proline-directed serine/threonine kinase that is a member of the Cyclin-dependent Kinase Family of proteins. Unlike other members of the family, the protein encoded by this gene does not only control cell cycle regulation, but rather mediates cell-cycle or DNA repairs through the phosphorylation of CK1. CDK5 activity reduces insulin secretion in pancreatic β cells and is implicated in IFNγ-induced PD-L1 upregulation, which allows certain cells to evade detection by the immune system and promotes the formation of lymphatic vessels. CDK5 is also associated with the migration of neurons and plays a role in the progression of various neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as various types of cancers.
