Ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) is a protein belonging to the P13/P14-kinase family. ATM is an important cell cycle checkpoint kinase and functions to regulate a wide variety of downstream proteins including p53, BRCA1, CHK2, RAD17, RAD9, and NBS1. ATM also plays a key role in double stranded DNA breaks and responds by phosphorylating histone H2AX, thus initiating a complex involving various other proteins that are recruited to the damage site. ATM mutations are associated with neurodegenerative disease and cancer.
