The most devastating of mosquito diseases, malaria, reached a peak of 241 million cases in the latest analysis from the World Health Organization (WHO). Treatment progress has started to plateau in recent years, and antimalarial drug resistance is on the rise. In this literature review, we explore the emerging challenge of antimalarial drug resistance and the need to analyze all stages of malaria parasite lifecycle to help develop the next generation of therapeutics.
