Researchers are striving to determine where and when relevant bacteria play a role in cancer progression and whether those interactions are localized to the gastrointestinal tract or occur in other tissues before malignancy. Understanding the role bacteria play, whether it be oncogenesis, tumor promotion, or treatment effectiveness, may provide an opportunity for intervention at the microbiome level in favor of cancer regression.
