DNA extraction from cannabis sativa using the Omni Bead Ruptor 12

DNA extraction from Cannabis sativa

Plant genetics plays an important role in the selection of phenotypic features. This also applies to hemp, for its industrial, nutritional, and medicinal uses. Geneticists investigate different strains of Cannabis to better understand advantageous phenotypes for growth and cultivation, including production of cannabinoids and terpenes, chlorophyll production, seed formation, and hardiness. Plant materials can be complex matrices as they include chlorophyll and starches; therefore, obtaining clean DNA is important for downstream genotypic analysis. This study evaluated the efficiency of bead mill homogenization in hemp sample processing as a reliable upstream solution to DNA purification. The homogenizer processed plant material in under 30 seconds, leading to robust gDNA yields with little DNA shearing. The bead mill is a robust solution for labs looking to add to their processing throughput for DNA extraction from plant samples.
